Summer Camp

Once again August sees the Scout and Explorer unit, head off on the annual Summer camp. This week away is a great week for our members to build on team work, achieve personal challenges and generally have some fun.

We like to vary our destinations, with many Scout sites around the country to choose from. This year we headed down to Ashdown forest, to a site used 11 years ago for one one of our first adventure style Summer camps. This certainly was worth the trip and for some of our members that are know leaders, it was nice to reminisce a bit.

After travelling down by minibuses we pitch camp in this amazing medieval forest, the site is large and spread out, which apart from the long walk to the facilities provides an amazing camp site.

The week ahead would be filled with adventures, from the more regular to the special ones that the south coast can provide. Our program would include beach and pier trips, powerboat tours and a special visit to the local coast guard helicopter base, a massive thankyou, to them has to be said as this certainly was a special part of the week. We also arranged for lots of more Scouting fun on the site such as tomahawk throwing and archery, with personal challenges like the leap of faith and abseiling, and team work exercises like crate stacking also being part of the program.

Our evenings on Summer camps, are often time for relaxing and enjoying some campfire songs and talking about the day. Obviously marshmallows/smores and hot chocolate are a vital part of this process. We also run wide games during the evenings these are team games such as capture the flag and man hunt.

We aim as always to provide a great week away for our members giving them chance to build on skills and have new Scouting experiences. Summer camps are a very long standing tradition in Scouting and 1st Colchester have rarely missed them over our long history.

A huge thankyou has to go out, to the great leader team who all help to make this week happen. We normally start work on the next summer camp straight away, and the leader team will be getting together soon to debrief after this one and start plans for next year.
